May 10th is a special day for many mothers. It is DIA DE LAS MADRES! ‘Dia de Las Madres’ or Mother’s Day is celebrated in Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala. On this day mothers and mother figures are given flowers, cards, candy, and other gifts that symbolize appreciation, respect and love. My in-laws, being first generation mexicanos celebrate el dia de las madres on May 10th rather than the second Sunday in May. Today, I would like to honor my mother-in-law, Rosa Barajas!
My suegra (mother-in-law) Rosa Barajas is someone who I love and admire. God truly blessed me with a special mother-in-law. I admire her positive attitude and every day I see her, she always carries a smile no matter the situation. The day my husband, Abraham introduced me to her, she welcomed me into her home and shared many stories with me (and still does).
Rosa is a true #mobilereina and boss! She has an entrepreneurial spirit. She would tell me that growing up in San Luis Potosi, she would often help her mom with their tiendita. When she moved to Los Angeles when she was 18 years old, Rosa started to work right away. Her and my father-in-law, Jesus have worked hard to create a foundation here in California. They raised three happy, smart and kind children: Abraham (my husband), Jesus ‘Junior’ and Jasmin.
After she had her two sons, she worked for Mary Kay selling makeup and beauty products. She worked for the company for over a decade! She told me she was one of their best sellers! And I believe it because she has taught me a thing or two about business! After her youngest daughter, Jasmin was born, she worked in retail and other independent beauty companies. My mother-in-law has always had the eye and passion for beauty and fashion. I believe she is ahead of her time and starts trends! Rosa has never been afraid or shy to experiment with her style.
Rosa is also very creative and crafty. She knows how to sew, make jewelry, hair bows and other hand-made products. She inspires me to think outside of the box and gives me confidence to move forward with my business.
Rosa takes care of our daughter, Sofia Luna. They have fun adventures together! This is something I love because she will grow up close with both of her grandmothers. What a blessing!
Often, when I pick up Sofia Luna after work, my suegra often shares advice and stories with me. These consejos, or tips have stuck with me over the years and I hope to pass down to our daughter. I asked her to share some valuable consejos with us about how, we as women and mother’s can feel beautiful. Here is what she said:
“Para ser bella, debes sentirte que eres bella, que eres triunfadora, forjarte metas y llegar a ellas, labantarte alegre y con optimism, no hay barreras, las barreras te las pones tu, y siempre mantener tus valores amate, para amar a los demas.”
“To be beautiful, you must feel that you are beautiful, that you are successful, go for your goals and reach them, to be happy and with optimism, there are no barriers, barriers you put them, and always keep your values dear and to love yourself, you will love the rest.”
