Sunrise Hike: a celebration of Women’s HERstory Month ☀

The month of March signifies Women’s Herstory (History) Month. Women’s History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and current day society.  As we come to a close on this herstoric month, we wanted to highlight how we celebrated Women’s Herstory (History) Month.

Mi Reina Mobile Boutique takes pride in celebrating the many stories of women and #mobilereinas.    #MobileReina is a term you decide for yourself.  Each #MobileReina has a story and a story to share.  However, a #MobileReina is someone who has to move forward with confidence and love.  There is no ultimate destination. You decide!

In honor of Women’s HERstory Month, my good friend, Olga Ruano (#LAHikeswithOlga @olgas_peak) wanted to organize a sunrise hike to celebrate and recognize our strength and beauty.  We wanted to honor women and mother earth. Olga is a #mobilereina, for reals!

When I moved to Los Angeles, Olga was one of the first people that I met.  We both graduated from UCLA’s Urban Planning program and would take the Big Blue Bus to campus together.  On these bus rides, we would see the streets of the city and discuss our goals and future endeavors.  After graduation, Olga worked for the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks & Recreation.  Her passion are parks and connecting people to hikes, especially folks who are not aware of the resources. These resources are there for people to use and take advantage of to improve their physical and mental well-being.

“Since I started working here, I look at Los Angeles with a different perspective and look beyond buildings and concrete sidewalks but I think about the mountains, canyons, beaches and forests that surround us and how we can connect people to these natural resources.  I challenge myself to think creatively on how can we enhance and sustain the parks, trails, natural areas and wildlife sanctuaries we do have, promote them and make them more accessible to people from all walks of life.”

Olga grew up in Compton, California and now works for City of Santa Monica’s Community & Cultural Services Department.  She is a colleague that inspires me.  Olga is out in the world planning parks with passion!   During her “free” time, Olga created a group to share her knowledge and hiking adventures with others. (follow on Instagram @olgas_peak #LAHikeswithOlga).  Olga created this as a side hobby because she would go on hikes and post photos on my social media and people would ask me about where they could go hiking or send me articles about hiking. People wanted to go hiking with her, but she soon discovered that some people wanted to go hiking but they did not know what conditions to expect or how to prepare for their hike.  So after some motivation and support from friends, she decided to start planning for group hikes and guide people by giving them tips and/or information on what to expect and what to bring or take on the hike. Olga also  wanted people to know that they do not need to drive very far or spend a lot of money to to play, improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We have awesome trails and parks in the Los Angeles area and she wanted to see every demographic of Los Angeles represented on the trails! 🙂

Olga researches, organizes and executes several hikes yearly.  Our Sunrise Hike was the first hike she planned this year and Mi Reina Mobile Boutique was honored to support #LAHikeswithOlga.

We reconnected with old friends and met new faces.  We completed a 4.7-mile roundtrip urban hike! From our starting point, the trail climbed to the top of the bluff giving way to amazing views  and wildlife sightings. It was awesome to experience this sunrise hike with a group of women.  Can’t wait for the next one!

At our next pop-up, we will be carrying some active gear to inspire you to get outside! Our next pop-up is in May 2017…more details coming soon!
